Naismith, James A.
(6 nov. 1861, Almonte, Ontario, Canadá–28 nov. 1939, Lawrence, Kan., EE.UU.).

Profesor estadounidense de educación física nacido en Canadá, inventor del baloncesto. Estudió teología, pero destacó en los deportes. En la escuela de entrenamiento de la YMCA, en Springfield, Mass. (1890–95), le pidieron que creara un nuevo deporte invernal bajo techo. En su versión del baloncesto había nueve jugadores por equipo (más tarde se reducirían a cinco) y se usaban cestas de duraznos como meta (luego serían aros con redes). Naismith fue entrenador del equipo de baloncesto de la Universidad de Kansas (1898–1937). Se le atribuye también la invención del casco protector para los jugadores de fútbol americano. En 1959 se estableció en Springfield el Salón de la Fama del Básquetbol, llamado precisamente Naismith Memorial en honor del inventor del juego.
